Weight is tracked separately because it is usually the real constraint. The estimate is shown as a range (midpoint ±20%) and compared against the typical included-weight allowance for the recommended container. If the estimate lands at or above that allowance, the calculator warns you instead of quietly recommending a size that could trigger per-ton overage fees.
Worked example: a 24-square roof tear-off
Say you're stripping a single layer of asphalt shingles off a 24-square roof (2,400 sq ft of roof surface):

- Container space: shingles never pack perfectly, so 7.9 ÷ 0.85 ≈ 9.3 cu yd of container needed.

- Weight check: 24 squares × 240 lb ≈ 5,760 lb, about 2.9 tons — right at the typical 2–3 ton allowance for a 10-yard container, so the calculator warns you to confirm the included tonnage and the per-ton overage fee before booking.

How to estimate your debris
- Roofing: count squares (1 square = 100 sq ft of roof surface). A simple gable roof is roughly the house footprint × 1.1–1.4 depending on pitch. Count every layer being torn off — a second layer doubles the debris.
- Flooring and drywall: measure the area actually being removed in square feet, not the whole room. Hardwood and tile run heavier than the carpet-based factor used here.
- Concrete and dirt: measure length × width in feet and thickness or depth in inches. The calculator converts to solid cubic yards, then adds a bulking factor because broken and excavated material takes more space than it did in place.
- Cleanouts and remodels: use the small/medium/large presets as a starting point, then look at your actual pile. One cubic yard is about the size of a washing machine; a full-size pickup bed holds roughly 2 cubic yards heaped.

Renting a dumpster: what to ask the company
Two identical-looking quotes can differ by hundreds of dollars once the container is weighed. Before you book, ask:
- How much weight is included? The single most important question. Typical allowances run 2–3 tons on a 10-yard container up to 5–6 tons on a 40-yard, but every company sets its own.
- What is the overage fee per ton? Commonly charged per ton or fraction of a ton over the allowance — this is where heavy projects blow their budget.
- What items are prohibited? Paint, chemicals, tires, batteries, and refrigerant appliances are commonly banned or surcharged; rules vary locally.
- Where can it be placed, and do I need a permit? Street placement usually requires a municipal permit; driveway placement may call for plywood under the rails.
- How long is the rental period?Most quotes include 7–14 days; ask the daily rate after that and the fee for an extra pickup-and-return (a "pull").
- Do you have heavy-debris rules? Concrete, brick, and dirt are often restricted to 10-yard containers or dedicated boxes filled part-way.
Common sizing mistakes
- Sizing by volume and ignoring weight: a 30-yard container full of shingles or plaster can weigh double its included allowance. For dense debris, weight — not space — decides the container.
- Assuming debris packs like it sat in place:broken concrete bulks about 1.5×, excavated soil about 1.25×, and bulky junk leaves voids everywhere. That's why the calculator divides by a fill-efficiency factor.
- Forgetting tear-off layers: a roof with two shingle layers produces twice the debris of one — check the roof edge before ordering.
- Going one size too small to save money: a second container delivery usually costs far more than the price difference between adjacent sizes. When the estimate is borderline, the next size up is cheap insurance for light debris (but not for heavy debris, where a bigger box just invites an overweight load).
- Loading before reading the prohibited list:pulling paint cans and tires back out of a full container is nobody's favorite afternoon.
Limitations
Every debris factor here is a rough planning value — real debris varies with material, moisture, and how carefully it's loaded, which is why weights are shown as a range. The container lineup and weight allowances are typical for U.S. roll-off rentals, but your local company's sizes, allowances, fees, and heavy-debris rules are the numbers that matter. This tool doesn't price disposal fees by material type, estimate mixed-load projects beyond a single preset, or replace a phone call — treat the result as the size to ask about, not a guarantee it will fit.

What size dumpster do I need for a roof tear-off?
Figure roughly 0.33 cubic yards and 240 pounds per roofing square (100 sq ft) per layer. A typical 20–30 square single-layer roof fits a 10–15 yard container by volume, but the weight often lands near the included allowance — confirm the tonnage before booking, and count every layer being removed.
Can I put concrete or dirt in a 30- or 40-yard dumpster?
Usually not filled to any meaningful level. Broken concrete weighs roughly 4,000 pounds per solid cubic yard and soil about 2,200, so a large container filled with either would far exceed legal hauling weight. Most companies restrict heavy debris to 10-yard containers or dedicated heavy-debris boxes loaded only part-way — the weight limit applies even when the box looks half empty.
How much does a 20-yard dumpster hold?
About 20 cubic yards of container space — roughly 10 heaped pickup-truck loads. With a realistic 85% fill efficiency, plan on about 17 cubic yards of actual debris. Typical included weight is 3–4 tons, which is usually the limiting factor for demolition debris.
What happens if my dumpster is overweight?
The hauler weighs the container at the transfer station and bills a per-ton overage fee for anything above the included allowance — commonly a meaningful surcharge per ton. Severely overloaded containers can be refused or require partial unloading before hauling. If the weight estimate here is near the allowance, ask about the fee before you book.
Is it cheaper to rent one big dumpster or two small ones?
One larger container is almost always cheaper than two deliveries, because delivery and pickup make up much of the price. The exceptions are heavy debris, where weight limits cap what one box can legally carry, and phased projects where debris arrives weeks apart — the calculator's phases option sizes each haul separately for that case.
What can't I throw in a rental dumpster?
Commonly prohibited: paint and solvents, chemicals, motor oil, tires, batteries, appliances containing refrigerant, and anything hazardous.
